THE Gum Bichromate(athon)
Of Montreal
Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse
Every year a few awesomely hardcore photo nerds get together for two week(end)s in January to take part in a very special marathon. The class I speak of is held at the SAA and run by Graham and Thery. It's officially scheduled for 6 hours each day over two weekends. In reality 6 hours is barely enough to get your fingers
wet.

Yes, everyone, it's Gum Bichromate Printing Time!

Mmm...chemicals. Now remember, kids, if it glows orange...don't lick it.

FYI: Silver nitrate sometimes used in photo developing has been known to cause brain damage... be careful with this one!

Yes, dad. Chemicals are bad. This is why we do not lick chemicals.

Nice stuff, now show me some platinum prints! :)

Also, from our conversation the other day (yes, this is me being pedantic)

"After exposure to light, the plate was developed over hot mercury until an image appeared."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daguerreotype
"The latent image was made visible, or "developed", by placing the exposed plate over a slightly heated (about 75°C) cup of mercury. [...] The developing box was constructed to allow inspection of the image through a yellow glass window while it was being developed."
